Writing

From standup comedy to epic theatre, you can bet I’ve written some. As a writer I make work that is thematic, witty and often full of pathos. I have written for the BBC, Nottingham UNESCO city of Literature and Live theatre events.

Comedy writing is my first great love and a strong vein of humour exists in the majority of projects I get involved with. I believe that comedy is the most powerful tool we have to share ideas and bring people together. Sketch and narrative comedy feature heavily in my creative output and I am currently working with Flying Boat Audio to produce the narcissistically titled Ben Macpherson’s Brain Hertz, a sketch comedy podcast. I also created the 48 Hour Sketch Show with Paria Theatre, a two day sketch comedy challenge.

For Theatre my past work includes The Festival of Fleeting Words for Common Air Theatre and staged readings with Flux Theatre. My theatrical writing explores communities, individualism and the relationship between the two. Characterisation is my speciality. I am currently developing my play Horsemen for a professional run.

Poetry and spoken word pieces complete the core of my writing practice. I have shared work on both the local and national scale. This work has included contributing to the Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature StoryParks project; psycho-geographic work that celebrates events and history of different locations and even a short poem read out by the late great Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2. My poetry is characterful and draws on my other writing strengths, from witty nonsense poetry to pathos filled panegyric.
